#SayNoToXenophobia
Xenophobia is defined as the fear and hatred of strangers or foreigners. The issue of #saynotoxenophobia cannot be blamed on politics or the economy; it is mostly in the mindset of people and the competition they created in their minds. There could be a 'bad apple' among the new population, but generalizing one unfavorable experience from one or more foreigners and applying it to every stranger leads to xenophobia. This animosity is also spread among the people. In addition, hatred of foreigners can be a reciprocating emotion when the positions are reversed.
I recommend that public relations professionals use social media constantly as a beneficial tool to reach a larger audience by spreading awareness through the hashtag #SayNoToXenophobia. She or he should be able to engage with and relate to content that will appeal to foreigners, organizations, and people who are against xenophobia. By doing so, she or he is creating a safe space for foreigners and immigrants to express themselves. In this digital age, any movement seeking to effect positive social change must harness the power of public relations and social media.
At the end of the day, we are one; we are all Africans; and the killing of our brothers and sisters has to stop. There is absolutely nothing good that comes out of xenophobia, and the best way to end it is to stand up for our brothers and sisters and end this cycle of killing our own. It leaves a negative impact on the victims as they lose their loved ones in the hands of people who should help and protect them.
