 Honoring Mandela `s Legacy :UJ Volunteers in Action

"The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall." - Nelson Mandela. These powerful words from Nelson Mandela's  serve as a reminder that true greatness lies in our ability to make a positive impact in the lives of others, even in the face of adversity. On July 18, 2023, I was honored to be part of the University of Johannesburg's Auckland Bunting Campus volunteers who dedicated their time to serve the community at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.

A Day of Service and Compassion

As a volunteer, I witnessed firsthand the impact of our collective efforts. The volunteers engaged in various activities across different wards, demonstrating their commitment to making a positive impact. They rolled up their sleeves to clean and sanitize various areas of the hospital, ensuring a hygienic environment for patients and staff. They also assisted with stock taking, helping to organize and manage hospital supplies, and ensuring that essential resources were readily available.

In addition to these tasks, volunteers lent a hand with laundry duties, washing and folding linens, and helping to maintain the hospital's cleanliness. Others worked in the soup kitchen, preparing and serving nutritious meals to patients, providing comfort and nourishment during their hospital stay.

The 67 minutes of service may seem like a short period, but the impact was significant. The volunteers' efforts demonstrated the power of collective action and the importance of giving back to the community. As we reflect on the impact of this day, let us remember Mandela's words and continue to strive for a world where everyone has the opportunity to rise above adversity. "I was deeply moved by the selflessness of our volunteers," said Lebogang M, UJ Community Engagement Specialist.

The Power of 67 minutes

So, what does 67 minutes of your time really mean? .For us, it meant rolling up our sleeves and making a difference at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital. On July 18, 2023, the University of Johannesburg's Auckland Bunting Campus volunteers came together to serve. Volunteer Efforts Our volunteer efforts were diverse and impactful.
